Increased self-regulation urged to combat unscrupulous mixing of diamonds05 Feb 2019
Increased self-regulation and education will be needed to combat the fraudulent mixing of undisclosed lab-grown diamonds with natural stones, panellists said in a discussion at Jewellery & Watch.
Gary Wroe, CEO of Birmingham manufacturer Hockley Mint, and Simon Rainer, a senior consultant to the De Beers Group, said participants along the supply chain needed to take greater responsibility to raise awareness about the practice and to eradicate it.
Diamond supplier David Weissbart highlighted concerns over costs of using state-of-the-art diamond detection equipment, which will help to identify undisclosed lab-grown diamonds in melee.
The discussion was chaired by Jewellery Outlook Editor David Brough.
