1. What is the most meaningful piece of jewellery you own / have made / commissioned and why?
I suppose the obvious thing would be to say my wedding band, but as a jeweller I’ve currently got 3! I know I shouldn’t but it hard not to get tempted, my current favourite is a triple band with 2 rose gold wavy edges and a graduated channel set platinum centre set with black diamonds. I think my favourite piece is actually my signet ring, again 18 carat rose gold but the when I did the research on the family crest it turned out that my paternal line and that of my wife’s crest were almost identical which was a lovely thing to find out.
2. How are you inspired?
Pride, passion, space, time, music, skill, detail. Things that take time and skill to make inspire me.
3. What has been the defining moment of your career?
When we won the Independent retailer of the year – over 10 years ago now but it still feels like yesterday.
4. What has influenced you the most?
My wife, our friends and family.
5. What is your creative process?
Always starting with a solid brief – I ask my clients for 3 words that they would use to describe their perfect piece. Understanding and listening to their needs and translating that onto paper. I then work out the structure and technical issues pointing out any difficulties and always trying not to over design something. Knowing im working with some of the best most talented craftsmen in the industry helps our confidence in providing spectacular designs.
6. What is the most enjoyable part of your work?
The ‘reveal’ after the consultation, design process, approval and construction all our clients have taken a leap of faith and trust us to deliver the piece of their dreams, however they always have a little bit in reserve and are a tiny bit nervous until they have seen it. However because I know what we can do, I’m not and when they ultimately get the piece delivered and revealed to them they are always really over the moon and I love seeing their reactions.
7. Where do your magical moments come from?
The detail, the extras, the story. I love creating the moments that a person will have for a lifetime.
8. What excites you most about the future of the industry?
The future of any industry is the next generation, and our next generation coming through are quite simply world class. I can’t wait to see what they achieve over the next decade.
9. How do you create magical moments for your customers / staff / business?
We always try and add that little bit extra, for instance when a client is buying wedding bands we try and find out where they are staying on their wedding day and have a little present delivered to them.
